Dear Dr. Thiessen:
Thank you for contacting me to let me know of your concerns about EPA’s maximum contaminant level (MCL) for fluoride in drinking water.
I have received several letters expressing concern about the levels of fluoride being added to drinking water, some of them citing the recent article in Salon magazine, and the possible health effects on sensitive subpopulations. I appreciate your letter, since you seem to have a great deal of expertise on fluoride health effects from your earlier work for the EPA.
I have asked the Chairman of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee, Ken Calvert, to contact the EPA to get clarification on any plans they have for changing the MCL for fluoride in drinking water. I am enclosing a copy of that letter and will forward EPA’s response to you.
Thank you again for contacting me.
Sincerely,
F. James Sensenbrenner
Chairman
